  3. Questions 1–8 carry 1 mark each.
  4. Questions 9–18 carry 2 marks each.
  5. Questions 19–27 carry 3 marks each.
  6. Questions 28–30 carry 5 marks each.
  7. Use of calculators is not permitted.

6. Two molecules of a gas have speeds 9 × 10⁶ m/s and 1 × 10⁶ m/s respectively. What is the rms speed?
7. A particle in SHM has displacement x = 3 cos(5πt + π), where x is in metres and t in seconds. Where is the particle at t = 0 and t = 1/2 s?
8. When the displacement of a particle in SHM is one-fourth of the amplitude, what fraction of the total energy is kinetic energy?

Section B (2 × 10 = 20)

9. The displacement of a progressive wave is represented by y = A sin(ωt − kx). Write the dimensional formula of (i) ω and (ii) k.
10. 100 g of water is supercooled to −10°C. Due to disturbance some of it freezes. What will be the temperature of the mixture and how much mass will freeze? OR Which option keeps water warmer while bathing? Explain.
11. Prove that for two angles of projection θ and (90° − θ) with same speed: (a) Range is same (b) Heights are in the ratio tan²θ : 1
12. What is meant by escape velocity? Obtain an expression for escape velocity.
13. A fighter plane is flying horizontally at an altitude of 1.5 km with speed 720 km/h. At what angle should the bomb be released to hit the target?
14. A sphere rolls without slipping. Find velocities of points A, B, C, D.
15. A thermodynamic system is taken through a linear process and then an isobaric process. Find the total work done.
16. A mixture of argon and chlorine is at 37°C. Find the ratio of average kinetic energy and rms speed.
17. Calculate the rms speed of smoke particles in air at NTP.
18. Two identical balls collide and move at 30° angles. Find their speeds and check conservation of kinetic energy.

Section C (3 × 9 = 27)

19. Derive expression for maximum safe speed of a car on a banked road with friction.
20. Give reasons: (a) Cricketer pulls hands back while catching (b) Easier to pull lawn mower than push (c) Dust falls when carpet is beaten
21. A helicopter rises vertically. Find forces on floor, air and helicopter.
22. A woman pushes a trunk with decreasing force. Plot force graph and find work done.
23. Derive equations of motion for rotational motion with constant angular acceleration.
24. Derive expression for KE and PE of a satellite and calculate binding energy.
25. State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem.
26. Work done in filling a tyre with air. OR Find heat removed by refrigerator.
27. Show that frequencies of vibrating string are in ratio 1:2:3:4.

Section D (5 × 3 = 15)

28. (a) Define coefficient of viscosity and terminal velocity. OR Explain stress–strain curve of metal wire.
29. Estimate speed, momentum and force of rain drops. OR Projectile thrown by running fielder.
30. (a) Show that SHM acceleration is proportional to displacement. (b) Show floating log executes SHM. OR Wave equation based numericals.
